A Need for Change

While modifying a rare classic car is often seen as an assault on history, the DeLorean DMC-12 is an exception. Many who have driven this iconic car would agree that its original dynamics are far from impressive.

The DMC-12, with its futuristic looks, has always lacked the performance to match, making it an ideal candidate for drivetrain improvement. The obvious choice for this enhancement is electrification.

Enter UK-based EV conversion company Electrogenic, which has developed a drop-in kit to transform a DeLorean into an electric vehicle (EV). I had the opportunity to drive this electrified DeLorean at the Bicester Heritage track near Oxford. The question is, does this modification take the DMC-12 to the future it always deserved?

The Electrogenic Conversion Kit

The DeLorean I drove was a bespoke conversion, yet it served as a prototype for Electrogenic’s kit, which will soon be available through the company’s international partners for local installation.

This offering will join Electrogenic’s existing conversion kits for the Land Rover, Porsche 911, and Jaguar E-Type.

“The kit is a full powertrain you can just bolt in with nothing cut,” explains Steve Drummond, Founder and CEO of Electrogenic. “Bespoke elements can be added.

It’s up to the customer and our partners how they situate the charge port, for example. We’ve made air conditioning for this car, and we’ve added a custom screen as part of the dashboard. Of course, we’ve added in a flux capacitor.”

A Nod to Pop Culture

I couldn’t resist turning on the flux capacitor during my test drive, but, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to travel back in time to when my fashion choices were more in vogue. “We haven’t gone backwards in time either, sadly, or forwards,” Drummond notes. “And I haven’t met my mother as a teenager.”

However, aside from the futuristic image the DMC-12 has gained from its association with the “Back to the Future” movie series, there are practical reasons why it’s a near-perfect candidate for an updated electric powertrain.

Why the DMC-12 is Perfect for Electrification

The DeLorean’s striking design and cultural significance make it an ideal candidate for electrification.

The original car, while visually stunning, lacked the power and performance to truly match its appearance. By converting it to an EV, Electrogenic is not only preserving the car’s iconic status but also enhancing its performance to meet modern standards.

The new powertrain promises a driving experience that aligns with the futuristic look that the DeLorean has always promised but never quite delivered.

Conclusion

Electrogenic’s EV conversion kit for the DeLorean DMC-12 breathes new life into this classic car, merging its timeless design with contemporary performance capabilities.

While it may not enable time travel, the conversion certainly propels the DMC-12 into a future it always seemed destined for.

The ability to modernize such an iconic vehicle without compromising its essence is a testament to the potential of EV conversions, paving the way for other classics to be reimagined and revitalized for the modern era.
