Matt Bomer, known for his roles in various films and television shows, recently revealed his experience of allegedly losing the lead role in the axed DC film “Superman: Flyby” due to his sexual orientation.

Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast, Bomer disclosed that he was initially considered the director’s choice for the role and even signed a three-picture deal with Warner Bros.

Impact of Sexual Orientation on Casting:

During the podcast, Bomer acknowledged that his sexual orientation may have influenced the casting decision. He described the era in Hollywood as one where sexuality could be “weaponized” against individuals, suggesting that this may have played a role in him losing the opportunity.

Exit from “Guiding Light:”

Bomer recounted how his audition process for “Superman: Flyby” coincided with his role on the CBS soap opera “Guiding Light.” Because he was likely to land the Superman role, Bomer was released from his contract on the soap opera, allowing him to pursue other opportunities.

Despite Bomer’s involvement, “Superman: Flyby” was ultimately shelved by Warner Bros. The film, initially set to be directed by J.J. Abrams, never came to fruition. Instead, Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns,” featuring Brandon Routh as the superhero, was released in 2006.

Other Actors Considered for Superman:

Bomer’s experience isn’t unique, as other actors have also been linked to the iconic role of Superman. Nicolas Cage was famously set to star in Tim Burton’s “Superman Lives.” At the same time, Jacob Elordi revealed that he turned down the opportunity to audition for a Superman role in an unnamed project.

Upcoming “Superman: Legacy” Reboot:

Looking ahead, James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” reboot is set to feature David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The film aims to breathe new life into the iconic superhero franchise and is scheduled to release on July 11, 2025.
